November 01, 2005Waffle Mania Started in Afghanistan by Wesley J. Crocker, TSgt, USAF A special thank you celebration breakfast will be served by New Carbon
employees in honor of TSgt Wesley Crocker, representing our troops serving in
Operation Enduring Freedom. The breakfast is open to the public and will be
served Thursday, November 11, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at American Legion Post
51, 403 E. Front St., Buchanan, Michigan.
?As we all salute our troops who have served or are currently serving in the
armed forces this Veterans? Day, New Carbon is especially grateful to have found
a unique way to show our support. It all began with an email from TSgt Wesley
Crocker in August. He told us that waffles in Uzbekistan are not the usual military
fare and if they had them at all, they were made ahead of time and were soggy
when served. At his own expense for the mix and using his personal home-style
waffle maker, he was making waffles for fellow service personnel. He found that
waffles helped to raise morale,? stated Tim Howard, Sales and Service Manager,
for New Carbon Company.
?New Carbon Company and employees saw this as a great opportunity to show
their support for our troops. The company sent waffle making equipment and
cases of mix to Crocker to help him bring a taste from home to the service
personnel and a new taste treat for the local Afghanistan employees working with
our troops. On this special day, we want to personally thank TSgt Wesley Crocker
and our employees and friends who have all helped to make ?Waffle Mania? a
success,? stated Rick McKeel, President and CEO, New Carbon Company.
Following the breakfast TSgt Wesley Crocker and his wife will take a tour of the
New Carbon Company plant located in South Bend, Indiana. Crocker will present
an American flag that has flown on a mission in Afghanistan to the employees of
New Carbon Company. The company plans to fly the flag as symbol of their
continued support and gratitude for our troops. (The Press is invited to attend the
tour and flag raising ceremony.)
Following the New Carbon Company event the American Legion Post will hold a
Veterans? Day service at 11 a.m. that is open to the public. The service will
include the program, The Legend of the Four Chaplains presented by Rev. Larry
Vollink, chaplain with the American Legion, Department of Michigan. Rev. Vollink
served as a chaplain for 20 years with the U. S. Army, retiring with the rank of
major. His service included a stint as chaplain with the National Guard of Indiana.
The service also will include selections by the Buchanan High School Band and a
vocal solo by Carol McKeen. It will be concluded with a salute to their fallen
comrades by the Post 51 Honor Guard, followed by taps.
